Corina, D. P., Hafer, S., & Welch, K. (2014). Phonological Awareness for American Sign Language. Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, 19(4), 530-545.
Few studies have ever examined whether deaf signers show a sensitivity to the structural (aka "phonological") properties of American Sign Language.
This paper describes the development of a novel test of ASL phonological awareness (PA). We describe native signer's and non-native signer's performance on this test, and demonstrate a positive correlation between ASL PA and English PA in native signers. This work has important implications for how knowledge of ASL may lead to improved abilities in reading English.
